CHP logoAHWAHNEE - A head-on collision on Highway 49 yesterday sent one area resident to the hospital, and closed down one lane of traffic for over an hour.

Shastalei Nelson, 20, of Ahwahnee was driving a 1997 Dodge pickup southbound on Highway 49 just north of Lauri Lane on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at about 6:43 p.m. Nelson stated to officers that she was traveling at about 50 mph.

For unknown reasons, Nelson drifted across the double yellow lines and crashed head-on into a 1996 Toyota Camry, driven by Conrad Mendosa, 21, of Mariposa.

Nelson told CHP officers at the scene that she was not injured, but Mendosa suffered major injuries and had to be airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

The northbound lane of Highway 49 was closed for approximately one hour, while the southbound lane remained open for one-way traffic control.
